Operation: Clean Sweep After Action Report

Operation_Clean_SweepThe U.S. Force deployed to Fire Base Charlie and secured the area by conducting short patrols of the area with one squad remaining back at Fire Base Charlie. While the majority of their forces were out on patrol the V.C. assaulted the base with a large portion of their forces. An intense fire fight erupted. The U.S. Forces lost their outer perimeter quickly and the base fell shortly after.

After capturing the U.S. Base the V.C. Commander order the captured POWs to be returned to the village. The prisoners, three soldiers who surrendered, the U.S. Commander who needed to be medic' ed, surrounded by V.C. began the walk back to the V.C. base.

The V.C. sapper patrol escorted the POWs out of the base and into the thick woods. They were traveling down a well established road when they encountered heavy U.S. resistance. During the battle over the base the U.S. Commander was able to send out a message informing all the deployed squads that the base had been over run. The V.C. squads were cut down rather quickly in a well coordinated cross fire ambush. The U.S. Commander was rescued and returned back to the base.

In an attempt to prevent the V.C. from transporting their supplies and weapons along the roads the U.S. Command deployed a mine field at a major intersection. The V.C. Commander sent a squad to destroy the minefield. Taking heavy fire the U.S. Forces retreated back within the confines of the base leaving the minefield unguarded allowing the V.C. to destroy the minefield. Once the minefield had been destroyed the V.C. were able to resume the transportation of their supplies.

Through out the day several skirmishes flared up between the two forces. Shortly after midday the monsoon season arrived. Heavy rains pounded the area swamping the area. Both sides valiantly continued to fight through out the drenching rain. It was during this heavy rain that the V.C. Commander issued orders to have a dam built deep inside of the gully bordering the village.

The V.C. were able to complete the damn but before they could bug out of the area a patrol of U.S. soldiers found them. An intense battle erupted along the ridge line and the deep inside of the gully. Eventually the V.C. were able to push the U.S. squad out of the area preventing them from trying to destroy the damn.

The U.S. Forces were in need of supplies. A convoy was scheduled for delivery but the trucks became stuck in the mud and could not make it to the base. The U.S. Commander ordered his troops to secure the supplies and transport them back to the base on foot.

The V.C. stumbled upon the stuck convoy and began to attack the U.S. Forces in an attempt to capture the supplies. To prevent the V.C. from capturing the truck the U.S. Commander ordered the destruction of the trucks.

The rain relented as the day wore on and both sides continued to battle. Three POWs attempted to escape from a prison camp deep inside of Laos. During their escape two of the prisoners were killed. The remaining prisoner buried his comrades. Using a radio stolen from the V.C. during the escape the prisoner attempted to radio in his location. A small squad of U.S. soldiers were sent on a black ops mission to rescue the POW deep inside of the Laos border. The small squad was met with V.C. resistance who were in search of the escaped POW as well.

Eventually the U.S. squad found their comrade. Not wanting to leave a man behind the small group moved through the woods to locate the graves of the fallen soldiers. They radioed back the names off the fallen soldiers dog tags back to the U.S. Commander.

In the end the V.C. maintained control of the village and the majority of the surrounding area, basically pinning the U.S. inside their base. Several American soldiers were captured and signed a war crimes confession. The U.S. Commander was rescued before he could be interrogated and forced to sign a confession.
